Hey guys, I'm gonna post up a quick tutorial that will give you the info needed to get started in PRO. (which starter, what to catch on the way to brock's gym, where evee and jackson's parents are hiding, and why struggling through the viridian maze is worth it.)
Starters: When you visit Prof Oak in his lab (the building at the bottom right of pallet town) you will be shown 3 pokeballs on a table and 1 a bit off to the side next to the wall. The three on the table are Charmander (fire type, you want high speed and high sp attack), Squirtle (water type, he is a tank so you want high def, hp, sp def), Bulbasaur (poison grass type you want high sp def, high sp attack, and high hp for him), and finally if you look at all 3 on the table and say no to them you can check the pokeball thats off to the side, it contains Pikachu, (electrical type either high spd and sp attack or high spd and attck.
Bulbasaur is the easiest to start with, the first 2 gyms you have to face is a rock and water type, which grass is super effective against.(his 2 hardest gyms are the last 3, a psychic gym, fire gym, and the final gym (whose leader has a stupid strong psychic type)
Squirtle is the next easiest starter, he will wreck Brock (the rock type gym leader) and level really well through Mt. Moon (cave that separates the 1st 2 gyms.) (He will struggle vs the 3rd gym and 4th gym though, so you will need to be catching pokes to get your team built up.)
Charmander is the hardest starter to go with of the traditional 3, not until the 4th gym do you finally find a type advantage (its a plant type gym)and thats the only one, yet Charmander becomes on the the strongest fire type pokes in the game with devastating speed and really high fire special attacks. (If you start Charmander there are certain types of pokes you will need to catch to get past the first 2 gyms ( or level him up to crazy amounts, but that takes a lot of time, even with membership, its better to catch a few pokemon and try to level 3 or 4 all around the same level)
Pikachu is the final pick you have, while staying true to the anime, and being able to teach that particular pikachu surf (no other pikachu in game can learn surf, except for your starter pikachu) He is even harder to start with than Charmander. While you will be able to easily beat the 2nd gym, getting there will be a problem, Pikachu will not be able to take on brock's pokemon since rock and ground types are immune to electrical attacks (and tackle won't cut it either) going through mt moon will be tough as a majority of the trainers and wild pokemon are rock and ground types. Also the team rocket boss has several ground types and you face him a few times. (also you have a chance to catch a pikachu as soon as you get into vridian forest (which I highly recommend if you have squirtle or charmander as your starter)
Evee and Jackson's Parents: After picking your pokemon you head back to your house, talk to mom then head back out and go for the grass north of the town, when you do you will get a pop up text concerning an evee wandering around your town, you need to go up to it and hit spacebar, (if there are a lot of people in the starting area, you may not see evee since our characters will cover it. If this happens, just walking in a widening circle from the center of town spamming spacebar, you ll hit evee eventually.) this prompts a fight with a trainer named jackson (try your best not to lose to him, you lose money, miss out on xp, and its humiliating, its a level 3 evee), after you win or lose to him you need to walk to the house that is directly to the right of yours and talk to the woman inside (this is jackson's mom) she will ask you to go back out and find Jackson for her (dont worry about this, you run into him again)
Now that you have picked your starter, found evee, and fought Jackson, you are ready to head out. On the way to Viridian City, you will be walking through rt 1 and rt2, rt 22, and viridian forest.
Route 1 Here you will find the usual pidgey, rattata, furret, sentret, spinarak, and hoothoot. (if you are a member you can also find a shinx (an electrical Attack stat based poke) Sentret or Furret is a good pick up as they can learn most of the HMs
Route 2 You will start running into the bug types (even Beedrill and Butterfree, though very rare) and you have a chance to encounter Snubull at night here (highly recommend catching one, though he is super rare, he is a fairy type which will wreck any dragon types you face.) (Tailow is a member only pokemon you can find here, but again he is very rare.)
Route 22 The most important route to getting pokes needed for the first 2 gyms. Here you can catch Mankey (fighting is super effective vs brock's pokemon) and a poliwag (nightime only) and, if you want a fire type, ponyta also spawns here during the day only)
Viridian Forest Lots and lots of bug pokemon here, also the chance of a pikachu (highly recommended catch, though very rare) and budew (plant type, also very rare, only shows up in the day)
So the pokes I would recommend catching up through to the 1st gym are: Sentret (rt 1)/Shinx (rt 1 if member), Snubull (rt 2 at night only), Mankey (rt 22 which is directly west when you walk into viridian city), poliwag (rt 22, only at night), ponyta (rt 22 during the day), Pikachu (viridian forest), and Budew (viridian forest, during the day).
Viridian Maze (it is located in the north west section of viridian forest, soon as you enter the forest, go left then up and you ll see the tree with a hole in it) Before going in, go back to viridian city and buy an escape rope, trust you will want this. If you can handle wandering around, you will find one of 3 pokemon at the end of the maze, Horsea, Growlithe, or bellsprout. It is completely random which one you will get.
And for the last tidbit, when you beat brock and are in mt moon, catch an onix, sandshrew, or geodude, you will need one of them to get through the 3rd gym (electric type).
